Plants & Lawns

From David Beaulieu, your Guide to Landscaping
Welcome to installment #426 of Landscaping Newsletter. If, like me, you live in a cold climate, you probably share my yearning for the return of woodland vegetation. I look forward to the spring woodland every bit as much as the spring landscape -- maybe more so, because woodland vegetation grows all on its own, with no help from me!

Jack-in-the-Pulpit

Your local woodland may vary from mine. But here are some of the beauties I dream about on winter days:

Don't ask me to choose a favorite from among this group. But jack-in-the-pulpit is certainly the odd-ball of the lot.

Black Plants
Are you interested in growing plants with black flowers or black foliage (or as close to a true black as possible)? Some nice contrasts can be created by juxtaposing black flowers with brightly colored specimens: imagine, for instance, a spring planting bed featuring tulip plants with red, yellow and black flowers!

Palm Trees
Those of you who enjoy warmer climes may wish to use the information in this article by experimenting with different types of palm trees in the landscape. For the rest of us, the article is just a "brain-warmer" -- unless, of course, you wish to try growing small palm trees as houseplants. Palm trees do make bold design statements indoors that few other houseplants can match.

Fast-Growing Shrubs
Fast-growing shrubs are a great choice for homeowners seeking quick informal privacy hedges. This article lists several fast-growing shrubs, linking to further information that discusses their main features and tips on caring for them.
