From David Beaulieu, your Guide to Landscaping
Welcome to installment #436 of Landscaping Newsletter. Starting a new garden is always exciting, but never more so than when you're young and you're starting one for the very first time. If you're the contemplative type, it's a project that will inevitably "put you in touch" with our ancestors, who interacted with the soil so much more than most people nowadays do....

How to Start a Garden

When I open up a parcel of land for planting, I can't help but think of neolithic times and how it must have felt to become the first humans to work the land extensively.

In my article on starting a new garden, I address everything from how to convert a lawn area into a planting bed, in the first place, to protecting your new garden from pests afterward. In between you'll find tips on such subjects as soil quality, fighting weeds and figuring out what to plant where.

Weeds: If You Can't Beat 'Em, Eat 'Em!
Some gardeners call weeds "enemies," but others refer to them as "lunch"! Of course, not all weeds are edible (don't go out foraging unless you know what you're doing!), and even those that are edible don't necessarily taste good. But in the case of some weeds, the most efficient and effective control measure may be simply to eat them! Find out about some of the weeds that qualify as edible plants.

Low-Maintenance Perennials
While many of us glory in gardening chores (caring for the garden is part of the overall experience that induces us to plant, in the first place), some busy homeowners may not always have time to "get their hands dirty" in the yard. Even if you do love working in the garden, there will be weekends when you wish to do something else (I do a lot of biking, myself). Marie Iannotti discusses 10 low-maintenance perennial flowers in this article.

(In Case You Missed It:) New E-Course
In case you missed my earlier announcements, let me remind you about my new e-course. For those of you unfamiliar with my courses, they're free and come to you via email, just like this newsletter. Unlike this newsletter, however, they arrive on a daily basis. My new one is called "Pick the Right Plant" and consists of 128 short lessons.
