| | Peru is one of the most fascinating countries in the Americas, filled with mysteries of the Incas and other lost civilizations. Cruises to the Galapagos Islands or along the west coast of South America often include an optional tour to the lost city of Machu Picchu or elsewhere in Peru. | | Peru Tour to Lima, Machu Picchu, and Cusco I had visited Peru twice on cruise ships, but never had the opportunity to go to Machu Picchu, Cusco, or the Sacred Valley. Since these sites were all on my "bucket list", I decided to do an 11-day "Real Affordable Peru" land tour with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) that covered these three destinations. I hope this detailed travel log shows what a memorable journey it was. | Machu Picchu - Lost City of the Incas Machu Picchu is the most spectacular archaeological Incan site in South America. This mysterious "Lost City of the Incas" in Peru has fascinated history buffs for the past 100 years. | Cusco - Mountain City of Peru Lima may be the Spanish capital of Peru, but Cusco is its ancient capital city. Cusco still has many Quechuan residents who are descendants of the Incas. This city high in the mountains is often thought of as a starting point for tours to Machu Picchu, but it's really much more. | Pisco, Peru - A Day at Tambo Colorado The Pisco River Valley in southern Peru near the Paracas National Reserve is a fascinating desert location, and the ancient Incan ruins at Tambo Colorado are an interesting contrast to those at Machu Picchu.
