From David Beaulieu, your Guide to Landscaping
Welcome to installment #431 of Landscaping Newsletter. Mention of hyacinths reminds me of the lead character in the classic British comedy, Keeping Up Appearances: Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced as "bouquet"), a royally bad neighbor. The guy next door is so afraid of her, he's reduced to hiding behind shrubs when she steps outside so that she doesn't "catch him"....

Hyacinth Plants
Click the link above to learn about hyacinth plants, including what colors they come in, how to grow them, and their connection to Greek mythology. Once you begin growing these spring-flowering bulb plants, you'll never want to be without them again. Unlike Hyacinth Bucket, you'll find them splendid neighbors to enjoy in the yard.

Landscaping in Small Spaces: Example

Landscaping in the city certainly presents problems. Where I live now isn't as urban as it could be, but I moved here from a rural area, so it does feel like "the city" to me. One would think that, as a trade-off, one would be rid of pests such as deer, but not so: Bambi's not shy about invading urban areas!

It's an even greater challenge to grow plants in a place like Manhattan. Container gardens are a partial solution, but you have to realize their limitations. I give an example in this Q&A.

Featured Reader: Beverley
Perhaps you've seen the question I've been posing about your favorite plants. Reader, Beverley recently submitted her "Reader Story," replete with photos, and I'm making her the "Featured Reader" for the week. Would you like to be the Featured Reader some week? All you need is a camera and a keyboard.
