The Emu Bay House by Max Pritchard Architect

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 11:04 PM PDT

This holiday house built to catch the sea views panoramic also to sheltering from wind. The building is elevated a meter above the ground to maximize the view and reinforce the dramatic form. Timber decked terraces either side of the living area provide outdoor seating options for different wind directions. The sheltered rear courtyard, framed by the building, large water tanks and timber screens focuses on a wood fired pizza oven. Corrugated colorbond, timber windows, flooring and decking, reinforces the relaxed timeless holiday atmosphere whilst the floating roof form adds drama to the exposed site. The living area, with its dominant floating "lid" roof, emphasizes the drama of the exposed site. Two bedroom wings radiate from this core, and enclose a rear sheltered courtyard focusing on a wood fired pizza oven. Indented timber decks, either side of the living area, provide other options for sheltered outdoor living, with the choice dictated by wind direction. Double glazing and high performance glass, cross ventilation and fans for cooling and a highly efficient combustion heater for heating, minimize energy use. Hot water is from an efficient electric heat pump.  A good example of a house dedicated to relaxed holiday lifestyle.

The Square House in Menorca, Spain by MODO Architecture & Design

Posted: 14 Jun 2011 07:03 AM PDT

The Square house was designed by MODO Architecture & Design.  This small project (180 sqm) is located near the seaside, in an urbanization on the northface of the port of Mahon, in Menorca. The area is very quite, caracterized by the existence of several isolated houses mainly composed by the intersection of cubic blocks. As the site is situated between two houses, the aim of the project was to create an introverted house regarding to the neighbours, and outgoing to the main views to the seaside. It appears as a compact geometry, in contrast to the unlucky catalog of formal solutions of the surrounding neighbours. The house is mainly closed on its north facade, and open wide to the south orientation, it appears as a massive compact object, perforated by a "great eye", framing the interesting views. The program is divided in two floors regarding to the existing strong slope of the site. The main entrance and sleeping area are on the first floor, while the living room and the kitchen are situated on the ground level. The kitchen is conceived to cook looking at the sea, this idea is reinforced by the use of the same floor natural stone in the interior and exterior areas. The exterior area is divided by different slopes, creating intimate or open areas as needed.
